For many years people in Sri Lanka have been asking the question, “When will we be able to receive money and make withdrawals via PayPal in Sri Lanka?” In the last general election held in Sri Lanka, the United National Party (UNP) guaranteed that they will allow this facility for Sri Lankan citizens. Looks like they held up to their promise eventually.
According to Mr. Harin Fernando, the minister of Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure, the regional head of PayPal is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka to hold discussions with officials regarding freeing PayPal’s inward payment service for Sri Lankans.“Regional head of PayPal will visit Sri Lanka this Wednesday (03rd). He is scheduled to have talks with the Governor of the Central Bank and Minister of Finance about this matter” he stated.
PayPal Holdings, Inc. is an American company operating a worldwide online payments system. This is an online payment system which serves as an alternative to traditional paper based methods such as cheques. Currently PayPal is considered as one of the world's largest Internet payment services. Through PayPal, small payments can be sent to over 190 countries at the moment.
But in some countries like Sri Lanka full PayPal freedoms are not available. We are yet to allow payments to be received and withdrawn via PayPal. However Sri Lanka has already freed outward payments by PayPal accounts, which can be linked to your credit cards. It is important for a developing country like Sri Lanka to have these facilities available since there are a lot of small e-businesses, e-service providers and individuals who are willing to use this service.
